I can hardly wrap my mind around it still. Just before we both settled in to try to sleep last night, Daniel looked over at the clock in our bedroom then back at me. It was about 11:40. Daniel and I had an exciting ultrasound appointment on Tuesday. I'd forgotten we were even scheduled for an ultrasound. A happy surprise. The purpose of this one was to try to determine the baby's gender. Those two words broke into our lives like a clumsy thief, shattering months of building expectations. What does it mean to be pregnant but to be expecting--words almost completely interchangeable in our understanding. Back in May, Daniel and I adopted a female, seven-year old little Jack Russell Terrier/Australian Cattle Dog mix. We had been looking for a puppy, but when I passed little Terri's kennel at the SPCA, I knew we had to at least say hi to this pup before leaving.

From A Mile in My Red Shoes

Last Friday, a friend and I went to see Hamlet at an outdoor theater near Baltimore, a place called "the Ruins." Hamlet is my favorite play of Shakespeare's for a number of reasons, but, as I was watching last week, I was reminded of one of my favorite scenes--Hamlet and the Gravedigger. The tagline sums it up well: "The harder the life, the sweeter the song." I may consider purchasing the soundtrack.
